St Philiberts Tournus Burgundy, France

This gently undulating countryside is particularly beautiful in late September and throughout October, when the grapes are being harvested and the vines are on the turn. Pretty little Romanesque churches lie dotted across the landscape.

From Tournus, take the D14 to Brancion. If you are looking for somewhere to stay, you will pass a sign to Château de Beaufer, on the route d'Ozenay, a chambres d'hôte with a good reputation.

Brancion is a tiny medieval village. Parking is at the entrance and as you arrive at the gate to the fortress, you will understand why. Rather like a film set, the castle towers above you and the little streets are unpaved; they remain stony rubble in their near original state. Walk through the old covered market building and up to the tiny church which retains its 14thC frescos in a reasonable state of repair. The panoramic view from here over the village of La Chapelle-sous-Brancion across the Grosne valley is superb.

Southern Burgundy Landscape, France

Vineyards border the road and you come to the picturesque village of Chapaize where you can sample some of the local produce. The Château de Cormatin, right in the centre of the village of the same name, should not be missed. This is a sumptuous example of aristocratic flamboyance under the reign of Louis XIII, with formal gardens, a maze and a charming potager.

Wind your way back to Tournus via the pretty wine villages. If organic wine is of interest, Cruzille is home to some of the oldest organic vineyards in Burgundy. Brissy-la-Mâconnaise has houses with particularly large verandas, and the village of Chardonnay gave its name to the famous grape-variety. It is possible to drop in for tastings all along the route.
