Drive through the forested area of pine and beech trees and picnic in the shade of the woods. There are spectacular gorges on the way to the uplands - huge mountain pastures covered with alpine flowers in early summer. The Ballon is a rounded granite summit, 1,250 m high and you can walk there from the Restaurant du Ballon d'Alsace on the D465 in about 30 minutes. On a fine day there is a magnificent panorama to the Alps. Wildlife includes the boreal owl, lynx, peregrine falcon and western capercaillie.
West of the Ballon d'Alsace, the slightly lower plateau of the Ballon de Servance (1,216m) opens up more impressive views. This can be accessed from a turning off the D486 at Servance, towards the Col des Croix. Walkers will enjoy the 15 minute walk along a path from Servance village on the right to the Saut de l'Ognon waterfall.
