Medieval Town Burgundy, France
Châteauneuf-en-Auxois

From Dijon take the fast route on the A38 heading due west to exit 28. (There are notorious speed traps along this section, so take care). Château de Commarin is in the little village of the same name. You can wander at leisure around the grounds, and there is a guided tour of the interior, available morning and afternoon from April to November. This château is still privately owned and is particularly renowed for its tapestries and well-preserved interior.

From Commarin, it is an easy ride up to the fortress village of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois and from here, you have panoramic view over the plains. There are arts and crafts shops in the village and several attractive restaurants such as l'Auberge du Marronnier offering regional specialities, or the Hostellerie du Château, with restaurant and 17 rooms.

A charming spot to stop and walk is Vandenesse-en-Auxois on the Canal de Bourgogne. From here, there are picture postcard views along the canal up to Châteauneuf, you can have a drink by the waterside and stop for lunch at the Restaurant de l'Auxois. Explore the pretty Ouche valley on the way back to Dijon.
