River Trips ![]() The Saone River The mighty Saône, one of Europe’s largest commercial waterways, is also one of the most beautiful. Take time out for a leisurely cruise from Chalon-sur-Saône and get an overview from a different perspective. You will pass the quays with their 18th century buildings, the medieval quarter, and the 16th century hospice on St. Laurent Island. There is the old commercial port, and the junction with the Canal du Centre before the countryside opens out to rich pastureland, Charolais cattle, wooded banks and interesting birdlife. The river is alive with craft of all kinds from rowing boats to yachts, pleasure boats to commercial barges. La Delta was itself a commercial barge until recently. Now completely transformed, this sight-seeing boat offers cruises similar to the famous bateau-mouche on the Seine in Paris. Roger Collins and Brian Latham, two English barge captains, run the day excursions offering a 12 km itinerary taking an hour and a half or the longer 22 km trip lasting three and a half hours. The chef on board offers a full lunch and dinner menu and there is a bar. Alcohol can only be served with meals.
