Cycling in Franche-Comté
- new routes to explore

If nature and outdoor activities are your passion, there is no finer place than this little-known region of France. Cycling is big in Franche-Comté and there is good information available at all the tourist offices advising on routes, accommodation and places of interest. Whether you want a gentle leisurely ride or an arduous climb, you are guaranteed beautiful countryside and a friendly welcome.

The mountains of the Haut-Jura might be known for the exacting stages of the Tour de France but in the other départéments, the Haute-Saône, Doubs and Territoire de Belfort, cycling is more gentle. There are routes following the beautiful valleys of the rivers Saône and Doubs, and loops for shorter excursions. Two of the routes below are for mountain bikes with itineraries.

The main routes

The Charles le Téméraire bike path goes from Port-sur-Saône to Gray, diagonally east-west in the north of the region. This is the most attractive part of the Saône, and you will have river cruisers for company along the route.

Eurovelo 6 - Follow the river Doubs from Dole to Belfort, on the east-west divide passing through , Besançon, Beaume-les-Dames, Montbéliard and Belfort, 187 km in all.

In the Jura, for leisure bikers, a loop route taking in some of the region's best attractions goes from Dole, visiting Arc-de-Senans, Salins- les-Bains, Arbois and Poligny. For athletes only, there is also a mountain route through the Haut-Jura from Lons-les-Saunier (dotted line). And for a cross-border ride, the Francovélosuisse is a 40 km journey from Belfort to Switzerland  through a variety of town and country.

Le Zed Jurassien is a three to five day, 136 km mountain bike ride from Le Grandvaux to the Loue Valley with detailed itinerary. The Grand Jura Trail - Grande Traversée du Jura - is a 380 km mountain bike trail which gets easier as you ride from north to south.
