Abbaye de la Pierre-qui-Vire
L’Abbaye de la Pierre-qui-Vire
Drive from Saint-Léger-Vauban deep into the Morvan Forest, through the beautiful fir and beech trees and you will come across the Abbaye de la Pierre-qui-Vire. Here, behind the tall granite walls, 57 Benedictine monks from the ages of 26 to 94 years spend a life of prayer and labour, making the famous cheese and pottery.
In the silence of the forest, men can stay at the monastery on a retreat, joining the monks for services from Vigils to Vespers.
Ancient & modern fuse
After prayer and study of the scriptures, the monks work for five hours a day in the shop, the garden, the craft workshop or the library. Here the famous Zodiac Editions are on view, a reference of Roman art which has been worked on over 50 years.
Founded in 1850, the monastery was renovated 13 years ago, adding a stunning new façade to the church. The modern architecture is a surprise amid the austere granite of the old buildings and the stained glass in the church is also interesting. Visitors are welcome to join the services in the church and there is a shop selling books, music, pottery and cheese.
