Yves Rocher and their Commitment to Nature

Beauty care from natural ingredients, Burgundy, France
Camomile Flowers

It’s drummed into us daily in the media to do our bit to help save the planet and become more responsible in our lifestyle. In the beauty treatment business, the three companies that stand for the green philosophy are Aveda, The Body Shop and Yves Rocher who describe themselves as ‘the world leader in botanical beauty care’.

Yves Rocher are known worldwide. In France their beauty centres provide massage, facials and beauty treatments using their own product range, as well as selling their beauty products. These use natural, plant ingredients which are good for your skin, and good for the environment too.

Being both manufacturer and retailer, they can control the whole chain from raw material to production and delivery. They have vowed to ‘reduce CO2 emissions, plant a million trees, and support those who do likewise, develop natural ingredients in the products and reduce packaging waste.’ High ideals in this corporate world.

The company dates back to 1957 but it was in 1989 that they stopped animal testing altogether. The use of GM plant ingredients is forbidden and they recommend the use of cultivated plants and renewable parts of plants harvested from nature. The development of organic farming is supported too. So you have a farmer like Laurence Martineau in Anjou producing cornflowers organically. Camomile too is grown organically in Brittany where their HQ is based. The only animal ingredients used are honey and beeswax.

‘Nature is fragile. We help to protect it each day’ they say through the work of the Yves Rocher Foundation. In keeping with their philosophy, a Women of the Earth Trophy is presented annually to like-minded entrepreneurs who are doing their bit to help the planet survive.

So as your muscles and nerves relax in the beauty treatment room, the lotions and creams are applied, you can rest assured that the world is a better place – or at least, some effort is being made towards it.
