Semur-en-Brionnais Semur-en-Brionnais is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Drive up the hill from Marcigny to appreciate the enormous size of this fortification, perched on the top of the promontory. Château St Hugues in the village, with its 9th C keep, is the oldest château in Burgundy. This was the birthplace of Hugues de Semur who was so influential as Abbot of Cluny. He also had the Basilique in Paray-le-Monial constructed, a smaller replica of Cluny III. Walk around the village stopping at the Eglise St-Hilaire
and the Maison du Chapitre famous for its painted chimney breast. The
