High on the hillside overlooking the Canal de Bourgogne, Châteauneuf has a commanding position. This is one of France’s most beautiful villages with fairytale turreted towers dating back to the twelfth century. Philippe Pot counsellor to the Duke Philippe-le-Bon had the château built around the keep; part of it is crumbling now but the paintings in the gothic chapel dating back to 1487 are still in tact. In June 2015 after extensive renovation a visitor information centre has opened, summer events are planned, there are workshops for children, and the château has a new lease of life.

Chateaneuf en Auxois, Burgundy, France

Wander around the small streets with their arts and crafts shops, and enjoy a relaxing drink at one of the cafes. Chez Bagatelle is an attractive chambres d’hôte if you would like to linger longer.

After your visit, drive down to Vandenesse-en-Auxois. There is a real photo-opportunity looking up to Châteauneuf over the Canal de Bourgogne. Château de Commarin is closeby.

The Château is open all year with the exception of Jan 1, May 1, Nov 1 & 11 and Dec 25. Closed at lunchtime and every Monday
