Abbeys
& Churches
The Romanesque architecture of the abbeys and churches
of Burgundy is regarded as some of the finest in the world: Autun cathedral,
St. Philibert's in Tournus and the Basilica Ste. Madeleine. There's the
monastic dominance of Cluny, the importance of Vézelay as a rallying
point of the Crusades, and the Abbey of Fontenay, all of great interest.

How
the mighty have fallen. Little remains of Cluny Abbey, once so glorious,
but it is an intrinsic part of the history of Burgundy.

St. Philibert’s
in the centre of Tournus is one of the most interesting churches
in Burgundy. It is light and uplifting, being a fine example of
Romanesque architecture with some stylish modern touches added.
During recent restoration work some magnificent mosaics were discovered
by the electricians. Quelle surprise! |

Modelled
on the great abbey at Cluny, this basilica, the focal point of Paray-le-Monial
is one of the great centres of Christianity.

Many a charming
village claims to be famous for its ‘art roman’. Lorenzo
Bohme explains that this is not what it seems; the difference between
roman and romain gets lost in translation… |

For Romanesque,
head to the Cathedral St-Lazare in Autun where you can see some
of the finest masterpieces of medieval sculpture in Burgundy. |
