| Château de Villette Since opening its doors a few years ago as a luxury chambres d’hôte, Château de Villette has become one of the most stylish places to stay in Burgundy. Situated to the south of Autun in the Morvan National Park, ‘Laugh often, live well, love much’ is the philosophy of this exclusive château in the heart of Bourgogne.
If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, this is for you. The private home of Coen and Catherine Stork caters for the discerning, offering the finer things of life: superb accommodation in a stunning setting and haute cuisine with wines to match, presented in a convivial, relaxed atmosphere. Surrounded by 500 acres of soft rolling countryside the estate is a wildlife habitat with centuries old parkland, ponds and streams. In winter, this hilly and varied terrain is considered Burgundy’s best shooting venue with partridge, pheasant, deer, boar and ducks, maybe even teal and snipe. Coen reintroduced wild partridge to the area. ‘They are fragile birds and with intensive agriculture and pesticides, they had died out. Now on the lee of the hill opposite the château, they are self propagating’ he says.
With enthusiasm, the Storks welcome guests to sample the best of what Burgundy has on offer, using local produce in the kitchen wherever possible. Catherine who comes from Belgium, creates and designs the meals. Coen, a Dutchman, is knowledgeable about wine and sits on a national judging board. Their cellar offers some of Burgundy’s best vintages. Meals are served on the terrace, by the pool or in the dining room. The interior of the house is traditional, with magnificent high ceilings and French windows. A regal curved staircase with its ornamental iron balustrade leads to the bedrooms. Château de Villette has three double rooms with bathroom en suite, Angelica, Freshford and Fairthorne and a family suite with two bedrooms sharing a bathroom, Emmelina and Rouge. These are decorated with floral fabrics in café au lait, lemon or pink, with an eclectic mix of furniture, and lovely landscape views.
Relax by the pool or walk in the countryside. There are stunning views from Mount Beuvray nearby; visit the Bhutanese temple or the market at Autun. The atmosphere at Château de Villette will work its charm on you and transport you into a world apart. There are also two self catering cottages available on the estate for holiday lets. Booking
