Le Bourg ChAteauneuf in the Brionnais region of southern Burgundy ![]() The area of the Brionnais in the southern most tip of Burgundy is one of the lesser known tourist destinations in the region. But in this, the home of the Charolais cattle, you will find wonderful countryside, châteaux and a medieval village all waiting to be discovered. For anyone who loves exploring antique shops, the tiny village of Châteauneuf in the Brionnais should not be missed. In the handful of streets which make up the village, who knows what treasures are to be found? Chris and Carolyn Salmon have recently transformed the old gendarmerie on the edge of the village into a four bedroomed chambres d’hôte. Upstairs there is a large family room sleeping four to five; a double bedded room with an extra single; and a twin bedded room. On the ground floor there is a double room with an adjoining room, ideal for children. All are light and spacious, each with new shower room en suite. The guests’ breakfast room also has a TV and tea and coffee making facilities, available throughout the day, and the garden provides a lovely place to relax with a glass of wine. ![]() Family room for 2/3 The Salmons are knowledgeable about the area and will point you in the direction of places to go and things to do. There is the Monday market at Marcigny, wine tasting in the Beaujolais vineyards, and Semur-en-Brionnais, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France nearby. In this gently rolling countryside, famous for Charolais, you will find the best beef in France. Every Wednesday, two important cattle markets are held – one at Charolles and the other at St.Christophe-en-Brionnais. If chocolate is more your scene, visit Bernard Dufoux in La Clayette. The smell on entering the shop of this master chocolate maker is intoxicating, and the taste, irresistible. ![]() Lavender room sleeping 4/5 There are little Romanesque churches to explore, and at La Clayette, you will find a magnificent château in the middle of a lake forming the centrepiece of the town. The car museum in the château is open to visitors. Nearby is Château de Drée with its ornate rooms and formal gardens. If you enjoy walking or cycling, there are routes on the doorstep. Le Bourg is an excellent stepping off point from which
to explore this totally unspoilt region. What is more, your hosts Chris
and Carolyn are on hand to help you make the most of your stay. ![]() Rates Bed and breakfast 45€ per night for a single room Bookings Email: cthesalmons@aol.com Places to visit
